What is Kathak?
Kathak is a classical dance form from North-India. You will recognise the dance by its elegant hand and arm gestures, rhythmic footwork and narrative expressions. The word kathak is derived from kathakar, which means ‘story-teller’. Kathak dance originated at the Mughal courts. Story-tellers would use music and dance to tell religious and mythological stories. In the 19th century this dance further developed itself as an artform.
The classes are taught by Maya Sapera and Aaricia Ponnet. Both of them receive their training from Guru (“teacher”) Shila Mehta. Shila Mehta comes to Belgium every year to teach and take exams, and co-founded our Kathak education. Now a leading exponent of Kathak, she studied dance under the illustrious teachers Gurus Prahlad Das, Pandit Vijay Shankar and Pandit Birju Maharaj. She is the founder and artistic director of Nupur Zankar.
